Dr. Jose Rizal once said, “The youth is the hope of the Fatherland”. As a student I believe I can do something for the sake of my beloved country, the beautiful Philippines. Even though I am a still a student, in my own little way, I can do something to make the Philippines a better place to live in. First, I must have a concrete plan, knowing more about myself, gain more self-confidence, to be more hardworking and self-disciplined to be able to finish my studies and become a successful one someday. But in everything I do I want to put God first as He is the source of my wisdom and talents. Second, submit to the policies of the school and abide by laws and support the programs of the government like caring for the environment. Encouraging people especially in our barangay to plant trees and educating them on how trees are to be cared for to grow robust is one of my interests. Besides, being a classroom and club officer I also play a part in the cleaning and maintaining the cleanliness of the school campus. After the flash flood happened in the provinces of Quezon and Aurora, I feel all the more obliged to continue advocating the clean and green program of the government. Third, I believe population explosion is another factor that contributes to the problems of the society. Hence, I desire to help the government in its information drive on Family Planning having acquired knowledge about this through its inclusion in the high school curriculum. Squatting, increased crime rate, famine, malnutrition and pollution are just some of the problems arising from ignorance of population control. Lastly, many a teenage today indulge in drugs, petty crimes and worst, unwanted pregnancy – things I hate to do and never will I as these will not only ruin my future but will make myself a part of the country’s downfall. What I can do in this area is to encourage my fellow young adults to involve in activities that will use up their time productively. In my humble ways, these are the things that I can do to make the Philippines a better place to live in. PREPARED BY: ABIGAEL PANGANIBAN Fourth Year Student Delfin Albano High School Cabagan, Isabela The Girl of Courage and Discipline Abigael Panganiban comes from a big family and born to a carpenter and a housekeeper. As far as I know her being the adviser and Values Education teacher, I can see her as a courageous and determined student – virtues that are seldom seen to teenagers at her age today. Her being a girl of these values is evidenced by her sacrifices as a student and a child. There are more times that she doesn’t take her snacks than having a very simple one not to mention her rising from bed early not just to help her mother in the household chores but she always desires to cope with the 7:00 o’clock time as she has to take a kilometer walk from home to school. Never minding the energy exerted on her way to school, she immediately starts her responsibilities as one of the classroom leaders. In her humble ways, she never complains when given tasks. During examination where integrity is tested, she is seen trying her best and never attempts cheating as some of her classmates normally do. A person at her age is expected to be irresponsible, uncaring and unmindful of the hardships of life but she makes a difference. Perhaps, the very impoverished kind of life she is now living is balanced by her wholesome attitude towards education. Motivated by her ambition to be of great help to her family someday, she directs her life with a great belief and faith that God is in control of her life – that by His grace, love and compassion, she will be a big Abigael someday . . . in His time. TERESITA S. SAQUING Values Education Teacher/Adviser JANICE BAGUNU – A picture of inspiration Janice Bagunu hails from a very poor family. Her father tills a small parcel of rice field owned by somebody while her mother is merely a housekeeper, attending to the four children who are all studying. Motivated by their ambition to press on toward a better future, Janice and her three other sisters exert much effort for them to go to school as they work hard for a small earning during Saturdays and Sundays for their weekly allowances. Though living an impoverished life, Janice is not in despair as she is evidently working so hard to be one of the top ranking students, being third in the first grading period and second in the second period. Perhaps this great achievement is spiced by her wholesome attitude towards bright future aside from the inspiration she gets from her classmates. Noticeably, she is loved by her classmates because of her being very simple, jolly, honest and courageous. A smile on her face is always seen when she deals with her classmates and teachers. What is more interesting about her is her child-likeness in terms of facing the hardship of life. I cannot see pride in her when her classmates offer financial assistance. She is considered adopted by her classmates as she is not required by her project group mates to contribute even a penny but she actively participates in the making of the project. During the Christmas party we had last December, she was excused from sharing money for the preparation but still you cannot see a shadow of self-pity as she actively participated from food preparation to the class program. In return, she does well in her dealing with her classmates. She does peer teaching but not giving answers during examination. One thing more, despite her schedules, she still finds time to spend with God for she is feeding herself with the Bible. She is very much interested to know more about herself and about her God. This attribute is hardly seen from high school students who come from lowly families. And I salute her for she does not take the difficulties of life a hindrance to her aspirations. TERESITA S. SAQUING Values Education Teacher/Adviser What can I do to make Philippines a better place to live in? As a young citizen and a student I take it a great responsibility to make the world a better place to live in. And this can I only do by making the Philippines a beautiful country. The big question is, how will I do it the fact that I am only a student and come from a very poor family? Yet I am not that somebody who earns a lot and give to the coffer of the government a big amount out for my taxes. Yes I have a lot of questions and seem to find no answer. On one hand I believe it is not really that significant if I do something but on the other hand I thought of doing even menial things in my own little way. Where do big things come in the first place? Is it not from small things? The answer is a big, big YES! As a student, I can make the Philippines a better place to live in by abiding by the rules of the school, by respecting the teachers and fellow students and by studying very well. I believe that by doing these things it will lead to a great contribution to a better society. As a part of the community, I will submit myself to authorities by observing laws. It is my belief that if one does it he does not only submit himself to the rule of law but he trains himself to be disciplined and becomes used to it and eventually an indispensable way of his life. Living as an obedient child in the family is not that easy as peer pressure is a strong power for me to give in and live according to the way my peers do. But really it always pays to think about things whether they are harmful or beneficial. Besides, what does the Bible say to children? Doesn’t it say, “Children, obey your parents.” and not “Children, obey your peers.” If it is God who says it, then it must be good because God is good. God gave us parents who will take care of us and no one in this world would ever do that and I agree that parents know best. God has given us the things that we see around to sustain the life that He has given us. This life is now in danger because a lot of people never realize that what they do today will cumulatively affect the way people live in the next generations. One of the problems of the world today is the total destruction of the ozone layer which is a threat not only to people but to all plants and animals. How then can people survive if the things that sustain their lives will perish? To me this is not only the concern of the government but it is the responsibility of every individual to care for the environment. In my own special way as a young person I can do it and have been doing it by making myself a model of waste management. I should not think that others have been uncaring and my small contribution will not make the Philippines a better place. I know it is not that easy to do all these things but it is my fervent prayer that God will always guide me to the right path, that is, making myself a better person so I can make the Philippines . . . and the world a better place to live in. PREPARED BY: JANICE A. BAGUNU Fourth Year Student Delfin Albano High School Cabagan, Isabela What can I do to make Philippines a better place to live in? If you ask a Filipino to answer this question he may say, “I can’t do anything because the Philippines is sinking. I can’t do it alone. There should be cooperation among Filipinos.” Some might say, “I can do this by joining rallies on the street so the government officials who are in power might be rattled to move to make this country a better place to live in.” Others might just react, “Oh, it’s just a waste of time. Just live your life the way you want it. Never mind the problems of the world.” Somehow, these kinds of people are correct. But I could imagine what the Philippines would be if all Filipinos respond these ways! Do I have to respond the way they do? Can’t I do anything for my ailing country? Do I have to just wait and see? Finally, I found the answer to these questions. “I CAN DO THINGS TO MAKE THE PHILIPPINES A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN!” Why can’t I? God has given me abilities, strength, power and wisdom to be able to do so. How would I do it? Making the Philippines a better place involves time, effort and a strong motivation and determination to do it. Former US President John F. Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” The way I understand it, it means that one has to take the initiative to make his country and community a better place. This could involve making sacrifices of the greatest and of the smallest kind and I believe they both make a difference. One of the greatest things perhaps would be running for a high post in the government and make changes in the socio-economic system or perhaps sacrificing your life to help people in times of calamities. However, as a young citizen, I am not capable of doing these. The one thing that I could do is to sacrifice time and effort to be of help to my family and help out around the community. I could pick up trash, join a community service group, obey my parents, help in the household chores, abide by law or even just be friendly. A friendly smile can go a long way. I lost my front teeth and have not replaced them with false ones but I believe if I smile at some people, then they might smile at some other people, then those people might smile and there would be smooth sailing relationships in the community. If it happens, crimes might somehow be minimized. My point is that one small thing can have a great impact in the community. For instance, if I decide to take an hour out of my time to pick up garbage at a local park, some other people could be inspired to do the same, and soon we would have a clean park. Just by sacrificing a little time and effort, I have made my country a better place to live in. I pray that God will help me do these little ways to make my beloved country a better place to live in. PREPARED BY: FE S. MALSI Fourth Year Student Delfin Albano High School Cabagan, Isabela FE S. MALSI – Looking into a bright future Being an adviser and a teacher, I observe the behavior and attitudes of my students. And I noticed that Fe Malsi is quite different from her classmates. Considering her background, she is raised in a family of ten where she is the fourth child. Her mother is a mere housekeeper and her father is a security guard. Her older brothers don’t go to school because their parents cannot meet their needs. They instead try to help the family fainancially. Fe, being the oldest daughter, is assigned to household tasks and religiously do them every morning but she can still manage to go to school on time and help out in the cleaning of their classroom and assigned spot. For some mornings, some of my students are making their assignments instead of helping out around for the cleaning activities. Fe is different. She is done with her assignments and she has in her hands a broom or a rag making herself a contribution to making the school clean. The way I see it, Fe is a good manager of time. She has time to help her family and she has time to study very well as she is one of the top ten students. Fe looks very simple. Most teenagers today want to go with the fashion but I see her to be a young girl of contentment with what she has at the moment but has the will power to move towards a better life. It is often expected that a person at her age seems to be irresponsible, uncaring and unmindful of the difficulties of life but she makes a difference. This is because of the very impoverished kind of life she is now living. What is important is that she has the vision to make her life better in the future and has the determination to achieve it. May God bless her. TERESITA S.
