Legatooo.. Pull-off and Hammer-on !

Still of many plans of madnesses and tips of Nicolas Romann. In this article you will learn how to control the technique of the légato which will allow you, after much drive (!), to compete with largest!

La technique legato

This technique consists in tackling a first note with the plectrum and letting sound the others only with the left hand by striking the cord with the fingers like a hammer (hammer), or by slightly drawing the cord then by slackening it to make it sound (pull-off).

Some tips above all:

The technique legato is acquired much more easily than sweet-picking technique. It is used by enormously guitarists. You do not let impress by fast sentences, that goes in made much less quickly than that wants to have the air of it.

  • look after the pull-off as much as the hammer so that each note arises with the same intensity
  • at the beginning, work slowly (it is to better do to slowly turn a exercise during 2 minutes that quickly and 1/10eme of second).
  • choke the serious cords while letting put back the palm of the right hand on the rest of the guitar.
  • work each one of these exercises in loop, longest as possible.
  • the exercises which follow are to be worked the every day, a maximum of time.

Let's Go !

To not burn stages, we start with some sequences on a cord:

Ex 1: tackle just the 1st note, then, buckle, buckle, buckle….etc

Ex1

Ex 2:

ex2

Ex 3: a good preparation with a future exercise on the 6 cords.

ex3

Once the sequences on a cord perfectly controlled, one complicates with sequences on 2 cords :
The number of cords used imports little, the principle remains the same one.

Ex 4: you will obtain this characteristic percussion sound, by choking from time to time the cords with the palm of the right hand

ex4

Ex 5:

ex5

Ex 6: a little tapping, I prefer tap with the major rather than the index, that allows me to keep the plectrum places from there, ready to tackle the first note of the loop

ex6

To finish, of the exercises on all the cords:
The 3 sequences which follow represents in fact a single arpeggio: G m7 11 played in jump of cords (strings skipping as says the shredders). This super plan will make you work your extension of left hand, look after the pulling-off well.

Ex 7a:to start, on the cords A and G.

Ex 7b: The continuity of the sequence preceding, on the cords G and E.

Ex 7c: Once 2 preceding sequences controlled, here the totality of the plan. You can also prolong it in tapping on acute the E cord with boxes 17 and 18, to slip to the box 22 and you will recognize one of the favourite plans of Greg HOWE.

Ex 8: If you want to work one exercise among this page, whereas it is this one. It is in the tonality of major C position 2. This sequence is worked by the majority of our guitar-heroes.

Ex 9: :  a major arpeggio assembled in sweeping and gone down again legato, left straight of the hat the magician Tony MACALPINE. The E note obtained on the cord acute 12eme box on is well played in tapping.

Voila ! I think of having given you what to wear the fingers during a few times.
Especially you do not stop there, create from now on your own exercises, those given higher being it only as example (move them on the handle where good seems to you, mix them). It is starting from your own exercises that you will establish little by little your play, thus building your personal sentences.
